What is cloud computing?

Cloud computing is a concept surrounded in myth and confusion. Various businesses and their marketing departments continue to try and define ‘cloud’ but become all the more confusing even to an informed customer. Cloud computing is the use of computing resources – hardware and software – that are provided as a service over a network, typically the Internet. The name comes from the use of a cloud-shaped symbol as a metaphor used in the system diagrams. Now , there is no need to send e-mails to yourself from home, or burn CDs to give to a friend, or run around with USB sticks or pendrives in your pockets! Cloud computing can revolutionize all these things. By uploading documents into the cloud, the documents can accessed anytime, anywhere and shared with others. Rather than having to store music playlists on an mp3 player, they can now be accessed via a phone to keep us entertained on long journeys without taking up space. We can also relax knowing that if something were to happen to our PC it wouldn’t matter as everything is stored in the sky – ‘cloud’. Cloud computing is a subscription service whereby you access the service provider. It is almost instantaneous. Unlike software which has to be customized to suit your needs, purchased, delivered, installed and users trained, cloud computing can be accessed the same day as purchase, the user interface downloaded and the backup completed! Indeed, as technologies grow around us, cloud computing is a simpler, more cost effective and a far better means of cloud storage than software options. They say it is the future, when compared to software, you can see why!
